May Cultural Event

The Suburra district and the underground archaeological site of San Martino ai Monti Saturday, May 18th (11.00 am)

The tour begins at the Imperial Fora, specifically concentrating on the Forum of Augustus: at the back of the square, a 30 metres wall separates the official and monumental area of Rome from the popular district of Suburra. Today, this ancient Roman suburb is an impressive area with restaurants and shops (known as Rione Monti), but our walk will focus on the ancient features of the Suburra. Crossing the amazing medieval Piazza di San Martino ai Monti, we will continue inside a suggestive underground: the rooms hidden under the church of San Martino. These were part of a Roman building (a marketplace or a private house) that later turned into a devotional site and is still decorated by frescoes. The surprise of discovering such a wide and hidden space below the modern city is astonishing, here we will experience that another city exists beneath the streets we walk today! The tour is a geographical and historical journey, ending with a hidden and unexpected archaeological site!

The fee for the guided tour is €20.00 for members and €22.00 for non-members. Please confirm with the Association if you wish to attend. The maximum will be 15!

Booking and payment deadline May 13th (no refunds are possible after the payment deadline).
